NASA has, in many ways, become a victim of its own success. It should not be surprising that this is where we are after 12 years. ![]() The government will have to, at some point, recognize, “Hey, the public’s money could be better spent on technologies that are going to capitalize on reduced heavy-lift launch costs.” That should have been the goal all along. When you add to that SpaceX’s Starship, Blue Origin’s New Glenn, which have new reusable technologies-I don’t think we are going to see the SLS launch for 30 years, as we saw with the Space Shuttle. NASA hopes to be able to launch it once a year. And it can only launch every other year, at first. But now we’ve spent an additional $23 billion on the rocket, and another $20 billion on the Orion capsule. Yet here we are, 40 years later, using the same engines. Each year it launched seven or eight times, which was well short of its goal of launching 40 to 50 times. We flew the Space Shuttle for 30 years at a cost of $3 to $4 billion a year. But the incentives were never there for these types of programs to produce the vehicle on time or on budget. How can you be lying like this to NASA, the public, Congress?” They claimed they weren’t. I remember when Boeing first came to me and said they could do this for $6 billion. ![]() If people had been honest about how long it would take, and how expensive it would be, to get the SLS ready to launch next week, they would not have proposed it, either. NASA’s Space Launch System was proposed back in 2010. Should NASA have its own spaceship to compete with SpaceX and Blue Origin? Suppressive Fire also has damage drop-off, but it also has a slight auto-aim about it, allowing you to hit targets even if you're not quite aiming on them. Your main attack has some significant damage drop-off over longer distances, so use Phase Rounds to deal good damage at long range. Stun Grenade is another great pickup for any character, and combined with Commando's Suppressive Fire you can very easily keep the majority of threats stunned and passive until you kill them.Ī couple more useful tidbits: Phase Rounds can travel through terrain, allowing you to deal damage while behind cover. Attack speed, critical hit chance, and on-hit items such as the Ukulele or Kjaro's Band should always be top priority. There are no bad choices here, but if you're just starting out, you should always focus on items that give you greater DPS over items that increase your survivability. Suppressive Fire should be used as often as possible for that extra boost in DPS, but its true power comes with the stun effect, which allows you to reliably interrupt dangerous attacks such as the Stone Golem's laser or the Beetle Guard's long-range strikes (for tonnes more info on all the different monsters in the game, have a read of our Risk of Rain 2 enemies when you get the chance).Īs far as item builds are concerned, Commando's versatility allows you to go in many different directions without too much trouble. On the left, you have the script editor, which is where you write your programs. The main window is divided into roughly three panes ( Figure 1). OpenSCAD's relative straightforwardness starts with its interface. And, believe me, FreeCAD is much more mind-bending. OpenSCAD is interesting because you use a programming language to describe all the objects that make up your pieces. We'll tackle FreeCAD further down the road in a separate tutorial. In this issue, we'll be looking at OpenSCAD. So far, the best programs I have been able to find for that are OpenSCAD and FreeCAD. Because, as I soon discovered, most mechanical pieces are made out of those parts, you don't have to wrap your head around Blender for that.īesides, you want a simple way of measuring precise lengths, widths, heights, and angles and applying constraints to each and all of them. Blender is great for making artistic stuff for printing, but it is massive overkill just to print cubes, cylinders, and spheres. This meant getting up to speed with CAD software for Linux. None of the available camera holders were any good, either because they didn't fit my cheapo Chinese sports cam, or they didn't fit my printer. If the camera shows the print going wrong, you can abort it before things get really messed up. There is also a practical reason for training a lens on your prints: Some print managers like Atelier allow you to monitor your prints from afar. You see, continuing with the topic of "3D printer as an aim in itself," a lot of people attach cameras to their printers and then turn the videos into time-lapses, giving birth to that genre of videos on YouTube that show objects seemingly growing from nothing on a printer's hotbed. What I could not find was a decent camera holder. ![]() That led to a down-the-rabbit-hole situation in which I ended up printing a drawer that would hold all the printer's bric-a-brac (spare nozzles, screws, bolts, and belts), a tool holder, and an improved filament feeder. The solution was to print an exhaust vent cover that would propel the flow of air towards the front. I found a post on Thingiverse that explained that my printer model had a design flaw: The vent over the electronics was facing upwards hence dust and little bits of plastic from the prints could fall in and damage the fan. ![]() I was in awe of my first prints and realized this was a thing I wanted to keep in good working order for ever. Truth be said, I have not been this excited over a gadget in years. Then there is a subgroup of people who seem to think that 3D printing is an aim in itself, and that the best use of their filament is to build things that further enhance their machines. If you do a superficial search online, it would seem that there are two things you can do with your new 3D printer: the first is print benchies (castles and skulls with which to adorn your bookshelf) the second is to create the bits of your next Comic Con cosplay costume you can't make with a sewing machine. ![]() There are tons of great companies to book with, some favourites are Island Head at Broad Creek, Lowcountry Watersports and Vagabond Cruise. Bridgewater, NJ - According to published work from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Boone, 2003), billions of tests are performed each year in U.S. (Though there are sometimes exceptions - see the chapter in the Film Festival Secrets book on submissions for more.)Īs the entries come into the festival, they are sorted by category and catalogued for review. When it comes to a call for entries here are usually at least two deadlines: one "early" deadline with a reduced entry fee and one "final" or "late" deadline, after which no more films are accepted for review. Of course the opposite is true: the festivals that promise better odds are the ones that receive fewer submissions, so the prestige of playing them is lower. The festivals that can do you the most good are the ones most in demand and therefore receiving the most submissions. The catch, of course, is that there are thousands upon thousands of films made every year and only so many festival eyeballs to watch them. If that movie strikes a chord with the programming team, a filmmaker can very quickly rise from obscurity to a place of renown on the platform provided by the festival. This is what makes film festivals special: they’re willing to watch a movie from anyone (so long as they submit according to the rules). Festivals play up-and-coming films headed for theaters, yes, but they also depend on submissions from relative unknowns to provide the new, the original, the unexpected. By the time they put out the call for entries, this year's staff has already put a lot of thought and work into the upcoming event.įilmmakers responding to the call for entries fill out the festival's submission form, pay a submission fee (at this writing, anywhere from $20 - $50 and sometimes more), and send one or more copies of their film to the festival for consideration. ![]() If you're submitting to a festival for the second (or third or fourth) time, be mindful of the fact that the relationships you established with last year's staff may need to be rebuilt with someone new. The period between the end of one year's festival and the call for entries of the next is also when staff turnover is likeliest. In reality there often have been months of preparation leading up to the call - analysis of the previous festival's successes and failures, reworking of the festival procedures and format, the courting of sponsors, and more. (There are a few festivals in the world that occur during the six weeks or so in between, but the holidays make such events impractical at best.)įrom the perspective of a filmmaker, the festival process begins with the call for entries. ![]() This is not to be confused with the January - December festival calendar that opens with Sundance and closes, more or less, with AFI Fest at the end of November. A little knowledge and a bit of graciousness go a long way.Ī bit of housekeeping before we get started – the festival year to which I refer is the annual cycle that most festivals perform when one festival season ends (generally just after the festival occurs) and another begins. Those stories rarely end with the festival programming that filmmaker's next picture. This is not to say that you should surrender all dignity at the festival door, but the books of festival lore are replete with stories of filmmakers who pestered festival staff with inane queries, displayed a sense of entitlement when their film was accepted, and then complained about the experience afterward. The less time you spend asking questions whose answers are readily available on the festival web site and the more you present yourself as an easygoing soul who is happy to make the festival's job as trouble-free as possible, the smoother the entire process will be for all involved. ![]() Few things will gain you more favor in the eyes of a festival director than a familiarity with the annual cycle most festivals go through and your attention to detail when it comes to the peculiarities of that festival. One of the most useful weapons in an independent filmmaker's arsenal is a general understanding of the way film festivals work. If you’re just getting started on your festival journey, it’s a good overview of the festival year and the what, how, and why of festivals in general. ![]() That’s why this article exists - it assumes very little knowledge about what film festivals are or how they work. Often it’s worse, since every festival invents its own way of doing things and some words (like “screener”) have multiple meanings. You take for granted the conventions and jargon used commonly by those “on the inside” with you, only to be brought up short when a newcomer asks you exactly what you mean when you use that word. After a bit of a public berating (and some private conversations) from technology publications, industry leaders, and the general public, most manufacturers got the message that benchmark cheating was simply not acceptable, and stopped as a result. Most benchmarks aren't there to tell you the theoretical maximum performance of a phone in lab conditions that aren't reproducible in day to day use, but rather they are there to give you a point of reference for real world comparisons between phones. There was substantial outrage when it was discovered, as these attempts at benchmark cheating ran counter to the very point of the benchmarks themselves. These development efforts ran the whole gamut, from setting clock speed floors, to forcing the clock speeds to their maximum settings, to even creating special higher power states and special clock speeds that were only available when benchmarking, with these efforts often resulting in just a couple percentage point increases in benchmark. They were all investing time and money into attempts to eke a little bit extra performance out of their phones in benchmarks, in ways that wouldn't have any positive effect on everyday usage, in an attempt to fool users into thinking that their phones were faster than they actually were. At the time, the investigation found that almost every manufacturer except for Google/Motorola were engaging in benchmark cheating. OEMs of all sizes (including Samsung, HTC, Sony, and LG) took part in this arms race of attempting to fool users without getting caught, but thankfully they eventually stopped their benchmark cheating after some frank discussions with industry experts and journalists.īack in 2013, it was discovered that the Samsung was artificially boosting its GPU clock speeds in certain applications, sparking a series of investigations into benchmark cheating across the whole range of manufacturers. A few years ago there was a considerable uproar, when numerous major manufacturers were caught cheating on benchmarks. |
